Plant and Oil Description

Sweet and tangy, the energizing aroma of grapefruit oil is extracted from the peels of this subtropical fruit. Grapefruit was introduced from the island of Barbados in the Caribbean as a naturally occurring hybrid between the Jamaican sweet orange and the Indonesian pomelo. The trees are generally 20-feet tall but may grow up to 50-feet. It produces fruit with white, pink, and red pulp—with sweeter with increasing redness. Its sweet yet tart flavor makes grapefruit a prime choice to create a wealth of traditional desserts in indigenous Central American cultures, and its bright aroma has made grapefruit a popular addition in modern soaps, lotions, perfumes, and cosmetics. 

What’s it Good For?

1. Appetite suppressant – Several studies point to grapefruit oil as being an ally for weight loss. Exposure to the aroma may reduce appetite due to stimulated activity in the gastric vagal nerve and the presence of the chemical compound limonene. Add SenseLAB’s grapefruit oil to a diffuser or massage into the abdomen with a carrier oil. Use with our citronella oil, which laboratory results also confirm may help decrease appetite, lower cholesterol, and promote weight loss.
2. Anxiety and depression – Who wouldn’t be cheered by the sweet, uplifting aroma of grapefruit? Citrus oils have been studied for their anti-anxiety and depression relieving properties. Grapefruit has even been shown to have long-term effects on decreasing blood pressure and stress levels. Add our grapefruit oil to a diffuser or create a room-freshening spray with a water-filled spray bottle. Combine with other SenseLAB citrus scents, such as orange, lemon, lime, bergamot, and tangerine oils. 
3. Acne facial cleanser – The antibacterial and antioxidant properties of our grapefruit oil—not to mention its invigorating aroma—make it a perfect addition to facial cleansers for oily skin types to help prevent the frequency and severity of acne breakouts. Add a few drops of SenseLAB’s grapefruit oil to your regular facial cleanser, combining with other SenseLAB citrus scents if desired. Note that citrus oils may cause photosensitivity, and should not be applied to the skin prior to exposure to sunlight.
4. Cellulite – Massaging our grapefruit oil into areas affected by cellulite can help reduce the appearance of these lumpy, dimpled skin imperfections. Massage twice daily for best results. Use with avocado, juniper berry, or jojoba oil, which may also work to help get rid of cellulite. 

How to Use It?

Add to a diffuser or massage into the abdomen to help suppress appetite. Add to a diffuser or make your own room freshening spray to decrease levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. Add to a facial cleanser to help prevent acne breakouts. Dilute with a carrier oil and massage into areas affected by cellulite. Pairs well with citronella, avocado, juniper berry, jojoba, orange, lemon, lime, bergamot, and tangerine oils.
